Tigers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Bases on balls don't always kill you.

At least Detroit manager Jim Leyland will tell you that because his critical move of intentionally walking both catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau in the 11th inning turned out to be a key piece of strategy in the Tigers' 11-9 16-inning victory Friday night over the Twins.

"It seemed like every time I turn around they're coming up," Leyland said of Minnesota's two left-handed thumpers. "They only hit three other guys and then they come back up, it seems like."

A one-out single, a wild pitch and a groundout to second put a runner on third with both of Minnesota's key left-handed hitters coming up against fire-balling right-hander Joel Zumaya.

Leyland came out to tell his players his game plan and after...

Three-run 16th gives Tigers victory over Twins (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Ryan Raburn(notes) (25), Josh Anderson(notes) (13) and Ramon Santiago(notes) (39) celebrate their 11-9 win over the Minnesota Twins in sixteen inning during a baseball game Friday, July 3, 2009 in Minneapolis.

Placido Polanco might have been the grittiest player on a night where several were in contention after 16 innings. The Detroit Tigers second basemen fouled a ball off his protective cup in the 14th inning, only to follow it up on the next pitch with an RBI single. He hit another run-scoring single in the 16th inning that put his team up for good in an 11-9 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday...

Talent, demeanor 'perfect storm' for Tigers rookie (AP)

In this June 29, 2009 photo, Detroit Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello(notes) works against the Oakland Athletics in the first inning of a baseball game in Oakland, Calif. Using a fearsome sinker, an emerging repertoire of off-speed pitches and a calm demeanor far beyond his age, the 20-year-old right-hander is quickly becoming one of baseball's best young talents.

Rick Porcello's raw ability made him the top prep pitcher in the nation. That talent, along with a steely demeanor, turned the Detroit Tigers right-hander into one of baseball's best newcomers. "He hates to get beat, and he hates to get hit," Tigers catcher Gerald Laird said. "When guys hit him, he takes offense to it.

Blue Jays - MLB News
Blue Jays Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

It wasn't so much losing to New York on Friday, but it was how they lost.

The Jays blew this one in the fifth inning when they allowed the Yankees to score two runs despite the fact the lone hit they collected off Brian Tallet was a bunt single.

The problem was that Tallet started the inning with two walks prior to Johnny Damon's bunt single that loaded the bases.

A third walk, this one to Mark Teixeira, brought in a run as did a passed ball by catcher Raul Chavez.

"I feel bad how we lost," said Tallet, who took the loss. "To walk a guy in and then have another score on a wild pitch/passed ball, it was a heartbreaker."

Manager Cito Gaston didn't go to his bullpen in the fateful fifth to bail Tallet out.

"You have to let a guy work out of...

Romero wins third straight start, beats Rays 5-0 (AP)

Toronto Blue Jays' Adam Lind(notes), right, celebrates his eighth-inning solo home run with teammate Lyle Overbay(notes) during a baseball game against the Tampa Bay Rays in Toronto on Wednesday, July 1, 2009.

Ricky Romero spent the past two winters tinkering with his changeup. All that extra work is starting to pay off. Romero pitched four-hit ball over eight innings, Rod Barajas, Adam Lind and Scott Rolen each homered and the Toronto Blue Jays ended the Tampa Bay Rays' seven-game winning streak with a 5-0 victory Wednesday.
